Geminis are known for their duality—those who fall under the twin sign often have two sides and are always down to try something fun and funky. Whether the sign has a place in your birth chart or not, you can harness some of this energy by donning Gemini Hair, a two-toned look that will dominate 2023, according to the latest Pinterest Predicts report.
“Geminis don’t have to choose, and your hair shouldn’t have to either,” reads a press release from Pinterest. “In 2023, two-toned tresses will take off more than ever. Gen Z and Millennials are behind this rising trend in hair color that mixes natural hues with bright blues, purples, and pinks.”
Pinterest searches for colorful combos are on the rise. Queries are up 215 percent for “blue and black braids,” 150 percent for “lavender and blonde hair,” 345 percent for “pink and lavender hair,” 280 percent for “brown to pink balayage,” and 135 percent for “multi-tone hair color.”
Quia Querisma, a hairstylist based in Dallas, has noticed an uptick in requests for multi-hued looks, especially from her college-aged and early 20s clients. “Gemini Hair is a lot of fun,” says Querisma, who works with Pureology, a brand that specializes in caring for dyed hair. “Hair is an extension of fashion and if you’ve got quirky and edgy fashion sense, why not apply it to your hair as well?”
The best part of this trend is how versatile it is, allowing you to really express yourself. Whether you’re doing pastel tips or going half and half à la Cruella de Vil, you can have fun with this bold trend. “Most recently, I’ve done deep orchid hair with teal roots, a baby pink and jet black split dye, and jet black with peek-a-boo color blocks in violet and dark blue,” says Querisma.
Illeisha Lussiano, a hairstylist in New York City, says that Gemini Hair can be a wonderful mood booster. “It’s great to hear people are excited to step outside of the box and in some cases their comfort zone,” says Lussiano. “The climate of the world is still weighing heavy on many so this is a great way to show yourself some love.”
If you want to dabble without commitment, Lussiano recommends going the temporary route first, incorporating color variation into braids or twists, or putting in bold extensions. “This way you can go as wild as you want with zero commitment,” she says.
But, if you want to go all in, know that you’ll have to be diligent about hair care to keep your stands looking and feeling good.
“The main thing to keep in mind is that if you’re coloring your real hair, as opposed to wigs or extensions, is that it will be a lot more high-maintenance,” says Querisma. “Regularly using high-quality shampoo and conditioner helps keep your hair healthy. Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner ($63) help keep hair moisturized and Pureology Strength Cure mask ($41) is a deep treatment to help fortify and protect color-treated hair.”
No matter how you decide to try out Gemini Hair, just make sure you’re having fun. “Sometimes the smallest change to your hair can make the biggest impact,” says Lussiano. “Try a new color, haircut, or style and enjoy a new level of confidence.”
